about

Satta Dub is the first ever Dub album by the legendary roots trio Abyssinians. Released by TABOU1 in 1998, it hasn't aged at all.

After years of tribulation looking for master tapes of the Satta Massa Gana sessions, Donald Manning, the group's lead singer and founder, finally got a copy from Clive Hunt, who had co-produced the album back in the day with Geoffrey Chung.

That same day, he contacted TABOU1 to release those as that label was then the leading roots Reggae reissue company (hence its motto "Roots with Quality" borrowed from the title of a Third World song). As with its other releases, TABOU1 enlisted Christophe Van Huffel, then a leading graphic artist in Paris, to do a superb album cover. Carter Van Pelt supplied a detailed interview of Donald for the liner notes.

Now, what about the music? Well, it sits at the very pinnacle of the roots Reggae genre, alongside masterpieces by Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer and a rarefied crowd of Jamaican rootsmen. The dub mixes are magnificent and avoid the gimmicks too often used and abused on so many dub albums. What you get here is raw but sophisticated music that reminisces of Jazz. Subtle, yet the drum and bass is well dread and heavy.

For this album's 20th anniversary, we have added 18 rare dub tracks, which makes this edition the definitive dubbyssinians album!

This record sits in the top 10 releases of the Reggae Guide and one quickly figures out why.
